All Hands AI is a company founded by Robert Brennan, Xingyao Wang and Graham Neubig. It announced itself in Introducing All Hands AI with a stated mission to build the world’s best AI software development agents, for everyone, in the open.
History
The company introduced itself in July 2024 as a new company. Its founders gave their reason for forming a company around an open-source effort: the open-source community is described as amazing, but careful work on a world-class user experience, extensive experimentation to improve agents, and a product that can make a dent in real-world development processes need full-time staff and compute.
According to the project’s first-anniversary post, One Year of OpenHands: A Journey of Open Source AI Development, its founders had been early contributors to the open-source OpenDevin project, which began in March 2024. The three joined forces to create All Hands AI as a company to carry on the project’s mission, and the project was renamed OpenHands.
Activities & Products
In its founding announcement the company says it is building OpenDevin, a platform for open-source AI software agents, and that it will keep improving the platform’s accuracy and user experience and build its community. Its stated reasons are that AI agents that can write software will make engineers faster and may let non-engineers build complex apps, and that a technology this powerful should be open for everyone to use and improve.
By the anniversary post the project had become OpenHands, and its stated plans included a general release of OpenHands Cloud, then in beta.
