Cognition describes itself as an applied AI lab focused on reasoning. Its stated aim is to build AI teammates with capabilities well beyond those of existing AI tools, and it presents solving reasoning as the way to unlock possibilities across a wide range of disciplines — with code, in its words, “just the beginning”.
History
Cognition introduced Devin in the post Introducing Devin, the first AI software engineer on 12 March 2024, calling it the first AI software engineer. In that post it described itself as well funded, including a $21 million Series A led by Founders Fund, and listed a number of industry figures as supporters. Devin was then in early access through a waitlist.
Activities & Products
Devin, an autonomous coding agent that works with its own shell, code editor and browser in a sandboxed compute environment, is the product the launch post centres on, and the post reports Cognition’s own evaluation of it on SWE-Bench.
